When I first opened League of Legends, I was completely lost. The tutorial barely prepares you, and the first real matches feel overwhelming. There are over 160+ champions, multiple roles, and way too much happening at once.
The biggest mistake I made? Trying to learn everything at once.
If you take one thing from this guide, it’s this: keep it simple at the start.
Understand the Goal (It’s Simpler Than It Looks)

At its core, League is simple:
- Destroy towers
- Push lanes
- Kill the enemy Nexus
Everything else (kills, items, mechanics) just helps you get there.
From my experience, beginners focus too much on kills instead of objectives—and that slows down improvement.
Pick ONE Role and Stick to It
There are 5 roles:
- Top
- Jungle
- Mid
- ADC (Bot)
- Support
When I started, I kept switching roles every game—and learned nothing.
What worked:
- I picked Mid lane
- Played only that for ~20 games
This helped me understand positioning, farming, and map awareness much faster.
Limit Your Champion Pool (Seriously)

There are too many champions. Don’t try them all.
Best advice (and what worked for me):
- Play 1–3 champions max
- Learn their abilities deeply
- Get comfortable before switching
Reddit players say the same thing:
“Pick 1–3 champions… don’t confuse yourself.”
Once your champion feels natural, the game becomes MUCH easier.
Farming > Fighting
This is the biggest beginner mistake.
Gold = power
And gold mostly comes from minions, not kills.
What I learned:
- Focus on last-hitting minions
- Don’t chase fights early
- Stay alive and scale
Even experienced players say farming is the foundation of winning.
Play vs AI First (Don’t Skip This)

I know—it sounds boring.
But jumping straight into PvP was a disaster for me.
Better approach:
- Play vs bots until you’re comfortable
- Learn controls and abilities
- Then move to real matches
Many beginners recommend this:
“Play vs AI until you feel comfortable… then go PvP.
Don’t Tilt (League Can Be Toxic)
Let’s be honest—League can be toxic, especially for beginners.
What helped me:
- Muting chat when needed
- Ignoring negative players
- Focusing only on my gameplay
“The game is hard… and players can get toxic.”
Your improvement matters more than random opinions.
Learn the Basics First (Not Advanced Mechanics)

From experience, beginners should focus on:
- Movement and controls
- Champion abilities
- Map awareness
- Basic positioning
NOT:
- Advanced combos
- Meta builds
- High-level strategies
Master the basics first—everything else comes later.
Final Thoughts (What Actually Matters)
If I could restart League in 2026, I’d do this:
- Pick one role
- Play 1–2 champions only
- Focus on farming
- Ignore toxicity
- Just play consistently
That’s it.
League isn’t hard because of mechanics—it’s hard because of information overload. Once you simplify it, the game becomes way more enjoyable.
